The Ultimate moving checklist

There is so much to do when you are moving. The amount of things to do can be overwhelming. The very best way to tackle the amount of tasks that need to be accomplished is to create a checklist and tackle each entry one by one. Using this step by step approach to moving will make moving organized and manageable. Keep in mind, no plan is foil proof and some adjustments or complete changes will need to be made throughout the entire process. So let’s begin with a list that will begin one full month before the move.

First things first, go to the post office and pick up a Change-of-Address Kit. With this kit utilize all of the information to notify friends and family, insurance companies, credit card companies, and others of your change of address. Once that is complete you can move on down the list by taking a good look around your current residence inside and out to decide what to keep and what to get rid of. How do I get rid of things before I move? What you need to do is use up any perishable foods or give them to the nearest food bank. A pot luck goodbye dinner is a good thought. All other non wanted items can be sold at a yard sale over the weekend, donated, or given to neighbors and friends.

If this is a do it yourself move, prepare a sub-list of the large items that need to be moved like large appliances and outside furniture. Make arrangements for moving truck rental and enlist the moving help of friends for lifting. Obtain all moving supply materials, markers, tape and remember newspapers. If using a moving company, get moving quote and a list of the things that will not be moved. Most important now, is to get appraisals of high-value items in the likely event of damage and future claims. This would be the best time to begin packing boxes being sure to mark the contents on each box. Once all of that is completed, handle all paper work. Pick up all important records from physicians, lawyers, etc. Close old accounts and open new ones in your new hometown if needed. Include handling all vital documentation as well. Inform the local Chamber of Commerce in your new town to get a relocation package.

On to about two weeks before the move, you should make arrangements to disconnect your utilities and get refunds for any deposits. Clean and get the utilities turned on at the new residence if possible. Remember to schedule a sitter for the children on moving day. On to the final week before the move, where we handle the disposal of flammable items contained in snow blowers, lawn mowers. This would also be a good time to do car maintenance. The last day before moving should be dedicated solely to cleaning up any final messes.

Finally, moving day! Check the house for last minute items, change locks, gather all keys and head to your new place of residence.
