Movers give estimates on the price of an impeding move to consumers. These estimates are normally calculated by the weight of all of your possessions. The costs associated with packing supplies and other services that may be included or requested by the consumer are also added. In general, estimates include the distance of the move, weight of shipment, and any special services needed. Most of the costs incurred will greatly depend on the shipments weight and how far you are moving, so pay close attention in these critical areas when requesting estimates.
There are basically two kinds of estimates that will be given that deal with the legal portion of your move. There are non-binding and binding estimates, and a hybrid of the two. With the non-binding estimate the cost is based on the inspection of the items to be moved. The final cost will be determined conclusively following the move. Usually lower that a binding estimate; but with one catch, there is no guarantee of the final costs of the entire shipment.
Binding agreements normally will cover the shipment and services that are listed on the estimate only. Any additional services or requests will be billed accordingly. You are obligated to pay the agreed upon price on the estimate whether the shipment is heavier or less than the estimated amount on the agreement. With the addition of services and additional items the binding agreement can be revised to reflect any changes. And most times anything added up and until 30 days after the shipment delivery date will be billed separately. So be careful to add only the things needed for shipment to the agreement or the final costs are sure to skyrocket quickly. Some services that you may not ask for but are necessary for proper shipment may be added to the costs. These may include some of the shipper responsibilities not being properly handled. Example: not being prepared to receive the shipment. Or having to store items for incorrect delivery information and things of that nature. Be careful to make sure all of these things are handled way before hand. Or it will cost you!
Lastly, is the not-to-exceed estimate agreement. This agreement will be based on the lower cost of the two previously mentioned. Must be given to you in writing like the other two agreements but the idea here is you pay for exactly what is weighed and shipping costs. That’s all. Based on the tariff rate levels, this estimate will serve as the guidelines for the agreement. The maximum amount that you are charged is outlined in this agreement.
From these descriptions you should now have a good idea of the estimates process and what to expect when making your inquiry. Calling to discuss the move in enough time to allow for any changes, special arrangements, and cancellations is a good idea. You should aim to make all efforts to build a good working relationship with the moving company for proper understanding of what is expected of you in the way of payment. Knowing what the estimate options are is the best start.
